I want to provide education to people about breast cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. PINK. EVERYWHERE. So, I want to provide some education about that. Before you buy something with a pink ribbon on it take a few seconds and see where the money goes. Because guess what? Not a lot of the sales from pink items go to fund breast cancer research. Here are a few examples:
Egglands Best - has eggs with little pink ribbons on them How cute, right? And inside their package they say they will donate $100,000 to Susan G. Koman (which don't even get me started on that) regardless of sales. That sounds great. But I looked up Egglands Best sales. They made $2.10 MILLION in the first 12 weeks of 2018. You have to be kidding me! I wonder how much they make the month of October with their cute little ribbon stamped eggs.
Pillows - yes, pillows with pink ribbons on them. The disclaimer, "$50,000 will be donated to breast cancer research." They didn't even state which organization.
Marketers know people will buy because of the ribbon. People want to do good. People want to help anyway they can. And we think we are when we buy pink. A better way to help is to educate or to donate to a specific cause.
Guess what? We are all really, really aware of breast cancer. What we need now is education. We need to know the signs. We need to know about early detection. We need to know that risk factors are just that, factors, guess what? ANYONE can develop breast cancer. ANYONE! What we need is education, not awareness. The pink ribbon is a great way to show support and I appreciate it. I really do. What I don't appreciate is marketers making money on this disease.
So, before you buy something with a pink ribbon on it look for that disclaimer and see how much and who they donate to.
Good causes are:
