Side Effects....

Well, long story short.....  I developed severe mouth sores as a side effect from the chemo and I developed a fever which ended up being neutropenia.  Basically, low white blood cell count and I ended up in the hospital for 4 days.  I was unable to eat or drink or talk.  My doctor said it was one of the worst cases he has seen.

My white count was .9 which is not good and my neutrophil count was .03 which is horrible.  I didn't really understand how bad it was until I googled what the counts should be.

There is some mixed info out there but basically:

A health white blood count should not be lower than 3.5.

A healthy neutrophil count should not be below 1.5.

So, I was pretty bad.  Anyway, I got IV antibiotics, some morphine, some percocet, some mouthwash, and some jello.  Once my counts came up I started feeling much better and my mouth sores started to clear up.  I was discharged on Saturday and I have been recovering nicely.

Oh, and I started the haircut process.

I also had a lot of swelling in my mouth.

Love these littles welcoming me home!

  1. Ohmygoodness, Dear Kendra! I had no idea this was happening, but so glad to know that it was all fixable and that you are home now and well again. What an ordeal, but it is easy to see now as typical for you, you power through in good spirit and outcome. We are continuing as always in prayer for you. I think the bright side of that experience is that the medicine is certainly working! Side effects are only side effects... as I see it, all indicators are that bad stuff is being knocked out big time.
